A Craigslist scam is circulating – if you receive something from Craigslist don’t put in your username and password or any of your information. Delete the email immediately. If you have a Craigslist account, they will never e-mail you about your password or username. Always log in to Craigslist from www.craigslist.com and not any other site. Below is an example of what the scams look like.

When was the last time you picked up the yellow pages to find a business? Most of us go online and Google the company to find out more information. Think about the last time you Googled. When you searched for a company/service and went to their website, what did you think while you were there? Was the website old and outdated ? If so, you probably thought if this website represents who they are as a company, then I better click away and try the next website. A lot of time we as business owners/managers make these decisions about other companies but don’t make the same decisions or view our own websites in a critical manner. As a business owner, whether you like it or not, you will be judged based on your website, your website represents your company and who you are, therefore it better be able to go against your competition.
Most people are overwhelmed by ads and marketing all the time, your brand needs to stand out from all the noise. You should be easily searchable on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Your website should be clean, easy to understand, updated, and have relevant information. Your current or potential clients should be able to quickly make decisions on your website that will lead to sales. If the design is clean and sharp they shouldn’t have a hard time at all knowing you are the one they want to work with! If you have received in the mail (snail mail) a letter from Domain Registry of America, it is a scam. It says something like “you must renew your domain name to retain your online presence…” then asks for you to return your selection of how many years you want to renew along with a check/credit card info and the bottom portion of the letter.
If Lifestyles has registered your domain we are always monitoring this and will not let your domain name lapse. If you have your domain registered at another registrar or bought your domain name yourself from GoDaddy or another source, then that company is the only company that will send you notices about renewing your domain name. If you receive a notice from anyone else it is best to just shred them as they are typically more expensive and will just create a hassle for you. Just like your online e-mails you have to be careful of what you receive. These notices or others like them will have a due date and look like an invoice but don’t pay it! The prices we have received on these notices are sometimes twice as expensive or more than the registry you currently have your domain name at. Don’t let lost data be your wake-up call! Every year approximately 43% of computer users lose irreplaceable files. Take a quick second to answer these questions. Are you prepared if your computer crashes, gets stolen, catches on fire, a flood or other natural disaster strikes, you or someone else accidentally deletes files? Do you have a backup system that is reliable and easily deployed? You can plan for computer disasters before they happen very easily. Some of you might have an external drive that you back your computer’s files up on and that’s a great primary source, but what happens if that gets stolen or there is a fire? If you do a little planning you can avert any headache that might come from something unfortunate happening.
There are several free or low priced options out there for you and we would like to give you a quick little tour! First up to bat is Mozy(link), it is a company that will back up 2 GB of data for free! You simply install MozyHome on your computer and it will backup your files daily. Mozy will backup all of your data; pictures, music files, video files, and documents. They also offer MozyPro which is for businesses. If something happens you simply log in and click restore and in a couple steps you are back up and running! The second option is Carbonite (link) it is similar to Mozy and also has a Pro counterpart for businesses. They have a free trial for 15 days but don’t have a free option, the pricing for paid options is about the same as Mozy’s paid options.
A final option for backup is a little different and has multiple applications – enter DropBox (link). DropBox is a system that allows you to install a program on your computer and then save files there that are automatically uploaded to the web. The unique thing about Dropbox is that you can then access those files from any computer anywhere you go! So if you don’t have a laptop or aren’t carrying it and need a file, all you need to do is find a computer and you can log in to your account and grab that file! Another cool feature is the sharing option, you can share certain folders of your choosing with others – clients, friends, or family. If they have DropBox on their computer anytime you update or they update a file, it immediately is changed online so you have the newest version. DropBox is also free up to 2 GB and pricing plans are very reasonable after that.

Do you think your business is too small to have social networking? Lifestyles Media Group does all the SEO and social networking for Holiday Inn Express San Diego and because of it they won a Google Favorite Places Award. What that means is that Holiday Inn Express San Diego was Googled either for directions or for information so many times and they received so many hits that Google gave them an award for it!
